Evolution of a theme

Until recently, a stack of ten 4'x5' oil paintings stood in my studio unseen to anyone. I painted these paintings during my senior year at Skidmore College where I was an art major. I studied at SACI in Florence, Italy for my junior year and took a lot of inspiration from the Fauves...a group of post impressionist artists known for their bold brush strokes and use of color. My ten paintings were all either of sailboats or tree-scapes. I loved the negative space created by the vertical lines of the boat lines and of the trees. I also loved the bits of vibrating colors that emerged from the many under paintings.

Well, getting to the point of this post...this week I decided to brighten up the empty walls of the dark hallways in the basement of ArtSpace Maynard (where I rent my studio) so I hung up several of these senior year paintings. It gave me a new chance to look at them.

Before long I began thinking of sailboats. Recently I have taken up sailing myself again now that my kids are learning. I also noticed that many of the seascape photos that I have taken in recent years contain sailboats in the scene (though I rarely include them in the paintings that are inspired by these photos).

Today I started sketching boats...and thus the theme of a new series of work seems to be emerging. I like this idea because it can build on the water/sky theme that I have been working on for a few years now while adding in a new element that is near and dear to my heart - sailboats (both for their beauty and for the experience of sailing).

Pondering of the day: So often, in my painting I paint something that appeals to me...for one of many reasons....the color combination, the energy of a brush stroke, the movement of the scene, the mood, etc. Yesterday I started a large diptych. I have been working on a lot of water/sky scenes with the dominant colors being blues and cool colors. Well, I was craving red so I decided in order to satisfy my need for painting in hot colors I would opt to paint an under painting for one of these water/sky paintings in red. As luck would have it, I really like the under painting....in particular the detail where the energy between the two colors is buzzing. Now I am stuck in that place of liking something and not wanting to obliterate it in the process of moving the painting forward. The combination of slate/turquoise blue and the hot red just appeals to my senses. I am wondering...do other artists have this constant struggle with moving forward with work? I guess it is better to have something on a canvas that appeals to me versus the days where I leave my studio unhappy with the work of the day. I guess this is where I should let what I like about this work rest awhile and see where it takes me next week...stay tuned. The part that I like is in the close up detail...

When I return to the studio after the holidays, I always feel like it is a new beginning and often that feeling leads to some frustration as I figure out which direction to head in the new year.
My "to do" list to get the ball rolling:
1. clean my studio and clear the decks.
2. sand some old unsuccessful paintings to prepare for new paint (the above image is one of those happy accidents). It was a landscape on top of a "dot" painting. As a result of the dot texture coming through, I never liked the landscape. Sanding it today revealed these dots of the undercoats popping into the landscape. It sort of became a confetti filled landscape which I thought was appropriate for celebrating 2012...or it could be the bugs and plant bits that fill the air on a spring day.
3. my next project is to make several mono prints and drawings
4. order new cradled gesso boards and some paints
5. go through my idea books and photos
6. do some writing

PS regarding the titles...Persistence was named on the day when my youngest daughter was sailing in her first regatta in her little sailing dinghy. The weather started out with pea soup thick fog which then cleared to reveal a windless couple of hours followed by a stiff wind. She had some tough races that day and had a pretty traumatic end to her last race but, never gave up. After the finish, I thought she is either going to give up sailing altogether or be hooked. She was hooked!
The No Regrets title came after a New Years' Day swim here in New England. I realized that when given the opportunity to take a dip in the ocean, one should do it so that there were no regrets for the swim one didn't take.

This is an oil painting on cradled gessoboard. It is 24" x 24" and is not yet titled.

I have been working on three series in my studio: ocean/sky, tulips and dots. I am enjoying getting to my studio more often these days and the freedom to work any one of these series. In February, I donated a painting to my kids' school auction - thank you to all you who bid on it! Also, in May, I will be donating a painting to the Concord Art Association's Paint the Town live auction ( www.concordart.org ). After my solo show, Gratitude, at the Left Bank Gallery in Essex, CT, they are continuing to carry my work. Sometimes I like to post the "beginnings" of paintings...not just the final piece. For me the beginning layers of a painting are the most fun. I often don't know which direction the painting will take me. It is the excitement of the unknown. For someone who likes a plan in life, painting is one time, that I don't plan...I react, respond and play. It is so liberating to go into a painting with endless opportunity. It is the final stages of a painting where I feel more constricted to not undo what I have done and tie up the loose ends! This fall, in preparation for my solo show at the Left Bank Gallery in Essex CT in December, I started many new paintings - it was truly fun. Now I must get to the finishing of them.

Last Dance

Happy New Year! This painting entitled "Last Dance" was inspired by one of those last days of fall when the landscape has suddenly turned to many shades of gray in preparation for winter but, every once in awhile you spot a small area of the intense colors still left from fall...the last dance of fall so to speak. You know how the Fall foliage in New England always feels like their should be an orchestra playing in the background as the colors dance. The morning I spotted this, it was cold and the air had a silvery quality. The light was bright and when it caught these last red leaves the result was intense...you couldn't keep your eyes off them. It was magnetic. As I painted this, I couldn't help but, constantly be reminded of one of my favorite books, Memoirs of a Geisha. Something about the care and beauty of the dance definitely inspired this. It measures 30" x 30". SOLD.

Well, I didn't realize how much work I had produced this Fall until I lined up all my recent paintings in the hallway of ArtSpace - 10 paintings! Three ocean/sky, two trees, and four wave paintings. I am trying to paint a large body of work encompassing earth, sky and water. When I started on the most recent wave paintings I kept painting on the realistic side and that is not what I had set out to do. I realize now that I had to study the mechanics and force of a wave in an observational way before I could ever "catch" (no pun intended!!) the wave in an abstract manner. What began as frustrating is now beginning to become fun. I'll leave it at that...check back later to get a peak at one of these new paintings!

I painting the canvas on the left last year. This summer, a collector requested a "sister" to Codman Pond II, so I painted the painting on the right. It was challenging to come up with the right colors and get the layering correct but, in the end, I was quite happy and so was the client - phew! Sold.

Stage Harbor

I painted this last Spring when I was working on a lot of very quiet paintings with very simple compositions. After months of painting quietly, I occasionally needed to paint in a loud, energetic, happy way. It was refreshing to paint in this style. This painting was inspired by the often crazy level of activity found in Stage Harbor in Chatham, MA on a busy summer weekend when everyone is scrambling to take advantage of being on the water on one of the all too few summer weekends. It always reminds me of that old movie, The Boatniks. This time of year, I miss those summer days of boating, though the colors of Fall and deepening light are beginning to capture my interest. This painting is 24" x 24" and was currently juried into the Frances N. Roddy Open Competition at the Concord Art Association. It is currently available for sale! Another painting from this "Summer Fun Series" was "It's the Best Time of the Year." SOLD.

This painting has so many layers of paint on it. To get the atmospheric quality, I painted both with brushes and palette knives and scraped and sanded over and over. At the end I applied many layers of glaze to get a really rich and Turner-like light. This painting has SOLD.

This painting is part of the Outer Beach series. It is 20" x 20". This was one of those "happy accidents" we painters love. On this canvas must be at least 20 layers of paint among those being several abandoned "beginnings of a painting". I really played with sanding, glazing, and scraping. The orange flicker of light on the upper right side had to stay once it appeared. It is SOLD.

This painting is part of my new sky/water series. The light in this photo reminds me of the kind of evenings where being out on the water feels spiritual. The air is warm, but the chill of the Atlantic Ocean floats a light layer of fog just above it. The light is so subtle, almost mystical.

This painting is 24" x 24". It is from a new series on which I am working. I have been wanting to paint the simple combination of sky, land, sea and this is it. If you are familiar with my previous work, this series is quite a bit quieter than some of my past work. It is forcing me to explore different ways of applying paint. I enjoyed reading about how Turner tried to not capture how a scene looked but, how it felt to be experiencing the ocean and sky. This is also a fun series for me because my source is the outer beach off of Chatham, MA which is dear to my heart. This is part of a new series that I am working on. Each painting in this series contains elements of sky, land and water. I wanted the challenge of painting a very simple composition and seeing where I could take it. In addition to the use of brushes and palette knives, glazes have been an integral part of this series. The reference I used is Chatham Harbor overlooking the outer beach. It is 24" x 24". I plan on posting more from this new series over the next few weeks. This painting is SOLD.

Sailor's Delight

This is the painting, "Sailor's Delight" (30" x 40"), that I used for the postcard to my show, Hotscapes. The scene is a beautiful creek in South Chatham that leads out to Nantucket Sound. The light is always so beautiful and always changing here. It is a great spot to go crabbing, catch a fish, go oystering in January (yes, January!) or go birding. The pole in the distance, that kind of resembles a telephone pole, is actually an osprey nest. Among the many birds we see here are osprey, green herons, great blue herons, gulls, eider ducks, snowy egrets, hummingbirds (seen often hovering around the pinkish-lavender phlox that blooms in July), are just a few. I love this spot as it reminds me of the relaxed pace of summer and the after dinner walks where we capture nature at its best. The title comes from "Red sky at night, sailor's delight, red sky in morning, sailors take warning". Okay, now I am thoroughly done with this New England winter and ready to jump into summer!

Studio Happenings

Today I decided to show a bit of what is happening in my studio. I am currently finishing two commissions (1 striped bass and 1 landscape). I have also started two different series...one quiet series of sky, land, water and one abstract and playful series based on summertime on Cape Cod. I have been taking Abstract Painting at DeCordova this winter and it has really given me a lot to think about.
